Abundant ferns and moss glisten with yesterday’s rain. Banana slugs drag slime across flats of mud. The mid-morning sun peeks between maples and hemlocks as bullfrogs croak in nearby streams. Near the path there’s a quick slither, a soft agitation of brush— a common garter snake, ribboning through gigantic yellow leaves.
